IN an unprecedented display of international endorsement, President-elect Hakainde Hichilema has made history by so far receiving 35 official congratulatory messages from heads of State and global leaders before being officially sworn in for his second term.
The extraordinary wave of early diplomatic recognition shatters previous administrative records, positioning Zambia as a shining beacon of democratic stability on the African continent.
Following his victory in the August 13, 2026 presidential election, messages of goodwill have continuously poured into State House.
Never before had a Zambian president-elect secured such a vast and high-profile volume of international validation prior to taking the oath of office.
The sheer volume of correspondence underscores the global community’s confidence in President Hichilema’s governance, economic turnaround strategies, and adherence to democratic principles.
The congratulatory messages span across contrasting global power blocs, traditional Western allies and regional partners, highlighting Mr Hichilema’s balanced foreign policy.
The United States Embassy in Lusaka was among the first to offer congratulations, emphasiding a 62-year partnership aimed at advancing regional security and shared prosperity.
Simultaneously, Chinese President Xi Jinping dispatched a message from Beijing, underlining the deep, historic ties between the two nations.
Regional counterparts have firmly backed the President-elect.
Key messages were received from Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko, Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Moroccan Monarch King Mohammed VI.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey issued a statement reaffirming the organisation’s enduring commitment to supporting the aspirations of the Zambian people under Mr Hichilema’s second mandate.
High-level commendations arrived from United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the executive leadership of Nicaragua.
The global community’s eager embrace of Mr Hichilema’s re-election ties closely to his first-term performance.
Having inherited a defaulting economy, his initial four years were characterised by aggressive debt restructuring negotiations and rigorous economic probity.
This disciplined approach earned him international accolades, including recently being named by The Telegraph (UK) as one of the world’s standout heads of government.
World leaders were openly expressing optimism for a ‘breakout’ second term focused on job creation, macro-economic stability and regional peace.
While opposition figures have hinted at legal challenges, the massive influx of international goodwill had cemented the legitimacy of the poll results on the global stage.
Domestically, the House of Chiefs and local civil society groups have capitalised on this historic momentum to urge all citizens to accept the election outcome, embrace peace, and unite behind the President-elect as the Government finalises arrangements for the grand inauguration ceremony.
