SYLVIA MASEBO PETITIONS CHONGWE EAST PARLIAMENTARY SEAT
By Josphat Hamakala
Former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Chongwe East parliamentary candidate Sylvia Masebo wants the High Court to nullify Anita Kamanga’s election as Member of Parliament for Chongwe East Constituency and order the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to conduct a fresh election.
Ms Masebo has cited Ms Kamanga as the first respondent and the Electoral Commission of Zambia as the second respondent.
She claims that false and defamatory statements were circulated against her during the campaign in an attempt to prejudice her candidature and improperly influence voters.
The former Minister alleges that Ms Kamanga and her team claimed she had lost the UPND adoption process and was only adopted because of her position in the party, while also publicly describing her as a thief and unfit to lead Chongwe East.
Ms Masebo says the matter even resulted in proceedings before the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s Conflict Management Committee.
The petition follows the August 13 election, in which Ms Kamanga polled 16,058 votes against Ms Masebo’s 6,798, out of 26,126 valid votes.
Ms Masebo wants the election declared null and void and the ECZ ordered to conduct a fresh election in Chongwe East.
