BRIEFING | 3 killed in head-on truck collision in Monze
Three people have died following a head-on collision involving two trucks along the Great North Road in Monze District, Southern Province.
The accident happened around 04:40 hours on Sunday, August 30, about two kilometres north of Monze Town, according to police.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo said the collision involved a Volvo tanker and a Scania truck.
Police identified the Scania driver as 28-year-old Sternford Munsaka of Kalomo, while one passenger was identified as 50-year-old Bryson Choongo of Manungu Compound in Monze. Both died at the scene.
A third victim, an adult male who was also travelling in the Scania, has not yet been identified.
The Volvo driver, 38-year-old Claytus Chibesa of Ndola, sustained general body pains and was admitted to Monze Mission Hospital.
Another Scania passenger, 41-year-old Winford Muntanga of Kalomo, sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the Scania allegedly failed to keep to its nearside lane before colliding head-on with the oncoming tanker. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
The bodies of the three victims have been deposited at Monze Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examinations and identification of the third victim.
Police have opened investigations into the accident.
