NORWAY SEIZES RUSSIAN SHIP IN ARCTIC OVER 4.2 BILLION CRIMEA CLAIM

Norwegian authorities have seized the Russian research vessel Professor Molchanov off the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. The seizure happened after a 24-hour standoff with the Norwegian Coast Guard.

The ship was seized to enforce a 4.22 billion dollar arbitration award won by Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz. The award dates back to a 2023 ruling by a tribunal in The Hague, which ordered Russia to compensate Naftogaz for assets it seized after annexing Crimea in 2014.

Naftogaz has been tracking the vessel for months. The company’s lawyers applied to a Norwegian court, which approved the arrest on Monday. The ship is now detained at Barentsburg, a Russian mining settlement on the archipelago.

Russia has condemned the seizure as piracy and is pursuing legal action to get the ship back.

The Professor Molchanov is used for commercial cruises and was carrying a party of Russian scientists. Passengers and crew remain on board but the ship is not allowed to leave port.

Norway says this is a legal matter between Naftogaz and Russia. But Russia sees it as an act of lawlessness in the Arctic.

NATO is busy provoking Russia. Then they will portray Putin as the aggressor for answering the call.

Russia cannot afford to show weakness in the Arctic. China retaliates fast. Russia tries to be reconciliatory. That is often taken as weakness.

Moscow will respond. The outcome won’t be nice.

How many more provocations will Russia tolerate before it decides to escalate.
