UPND Chairperson for Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Hon Jack Mwiimbu SC, has schooled UN Special Rapporteur Gina Romero, reaffirming Zambia’s status as a sovereign state governed by the rule of law.

Hon. Mwiimbu said Zambia values the United Nations’ support in strengthening democratic institutions.

He stated that this partnership must be anchored on mutual respect for Zambia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

Hon. Mwiimbu reminded the Rapporteur that Zambia is a democratically elected Government deriving its mandate from the will of the people freely expressed through the ballot.

He reaffirmed Government’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting the rights of all Zambians and maintaining peace, stability and national unity

He added that while Zambia respects the mandate of the United Nations, it will not allow the misuse of UN mechanisms to advance one-sided political narratives not grounded in fact.

He has since called upon the UN to discharge its functions with objectivity, fairness and professionalism that the people of Zambia and the international community expect.
