Iran Says U.S. Strike Hit Wedding in Southern Iran, Washington Investigates
Iran says a U.S. airstrike struck a residential home during a wedding celebration in Kuhestak, Sirik County, in southern Iran, killing at least five people and injuring nearly 70 others.
The strike occurred on September 1 amid a wider wave of U.S. attacks on Iranian military and communications targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military said it was aware of the reports and stressed that it does not intentionally target civilians. Vice President JD Vance said the incident is being investigated to determine what happened.
A Reuters analysis of verified images and footage reviewed by weapons experts found that the damage was consistent with a direct hit by a U.S. munition, rather than a ricochet or secondary impact.
Iran has condemned the incident, while the United States has not formally accepted responsibility for the strike on the wedding.
