LUANGWA LODGES FACE INSPECTION OVER SEX-FOR-FISH CONCERNS
THE Luangwa Town Council has been directed to intensify inspections of lodges suspected of operating as brothels amid concerns that some women are allegedly exchanging sex for fish.
Luangwa District Commissioner Luke Chikani said regular inspections were necessary to ensure that accommodation facilities were operating within the law and were not being used for illegal activities.
He said the alleged practice of transactional sex posed social and health risks to the community, particularly if vulnerable people were being drawn into the practice because of economic hardships.
Mr Chikani directed the council to take action against establishments found operating outside the law, including closing those involved in illegal activities.
He said enforcement should, however, be accompanied by community sensitisation to help residents understand the social and health dangers associated with transactional sex.
Mr Chikani said there was also a need to explore alternative livelihood opportunities for women who might be engaging in the practice because of economic challenges.
