U.S. Unveils “Tanker for Tanker” Strategy, Targets Three Iranian-Linked Oil Tankers

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that U.S. forces have permanently disabled three Iranian-linked oil tankers — M/T Downy, M/T Stark 1, and M/T Kylo — as part of a new strategy reportedly known as “Tanker for Tanker.”

Under the strategy, U.S. commanders have warned that attacks on American vessels could trigger direct economic and maritime consequences for Iran, including strikes against oil tankers linked to its energy network.

CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said the United States would impose a greater economic cost on Iran in response to attacks against U.S. vessels, with the reported policy linking every two American ships targeted to three Iranian-linked tankers being disabled.

The United States has also warned that further attacks could lead to additional strikes against Iran’s tanker fleet if Tehran does not halt attacks on U.S. forces and shipping

The move marks a significant escalation in the pressure campaign against Iran’s oil-export infrastructure and could further disrupt commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
