Russia Warns Norway Over U.S. Missile Deployment
Russia has warned that it could consider targeting facilities in Norway following the deployment of a U.S. missile system in Trondheim capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Moscow claims the system could enable strikes against a large portion of Russian territory, potentially reaching as far as Moscow.
The system was reportedly deployed during Exercise Atlantic City, held from August 26 to September 4 with Norwegian, U.S. and British forces. Oslo describes the exercise as defensive training conducted as part of NATO’s Arctic Sentry initiative.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused NATO of expanding its strike capabilities against Russia, warning that U.S. military sites deployed in Norway would receive “special attention” from Russian forces.
The warning marks another escalation in tensions between Moscow and NATO over military deployments in the Arctic and northern Europe.
