Iran Appeals to UN, Accuses U.S. of War Crimes Over Oil Tanker Strikes
Iran has formally escalated its diplomatic response to the U.S. destruction of Iranian commercial oil tankers, submitting its objections to the United Nations and calling for international action against Washington.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. strikes on Iranian commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, describing the attacks as illegal acts of aggression and a serious violation of international law.
Tehran has also called on the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general to condemn what Iran describes as unlawful U.S. military action against its commercial shipping.
Iran argues that deliberately targeting commercial vessels constitutes a potential war crime and has demanded that the international community take steps to halt further U.S. attacks. These are allegations made by Tehran and do not represent an independent legal finding by the United Nations
The diplomatic move comes after U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island. Washington said the strikes followed Iranian attacks on U.S. Navy vessels and targeted tankers allegedly connected to networks financing Iran’s IRGC and regional proxies.
The dispute is unfolding alongside a major escalation at sea, with Iran subsequently claiming attacks on 10 vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. The confrontation has sharply disrupted commercial shipping and pushed Brent crude above $100 per barrel.
The situation remains highly fluid. Iran’s legal allegations and the circumstances surrounding the tanker strikes remain subjects of international dispute, while further escalation around the Strait of Hormuz could trigger additional diplomatic and military consequences.
