Iran Reportedly Uses Alternative Trade System to Bypass Western Sanctions

Tehran is reportedly using a covert trade mechanism resembling a barter and credit system, allowing proceeds from Iranian oil sales to China to be converted into credits that can be used to purchase a range of goods.

According to reports, around $2–$2.5 billion flowed through the system over the past year, helping finance purchases including medicines, vehicles, telecommunications equipment and military-related supplies without relying directly on the international banking system.

Despite Washington’s extensive sanctions on Iran, Tehran appears to have developed alternative channels to keep trade moving. China reportedly accounts for more than 80% of Iran’s exported oil, making Beijing a critical market for Iranian crude.

The system illustrates how Iran continues to adapt to U.S. economic pressure, although the full scale and effectiveness of the reported mechanism remain difficult to independently verify.
