Germany considers restricting AfD access to classified military plans
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius wants to prevent a potential regional government led by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt from accessing certain classified military information, Bloomberg reports.
Berlin is reportedly concerned that sensitive details contained in Germany’s and NATO’s defense plans could be passed to Russia.
The classified OPLAN document, which runs to around 1,000 pages, outlines Germany’s and NATO’s preparations for a major war or crisis. Its full version is currently accessible to the governments of all 16 German states.
The move follows the AfD’s strong performance in Saxony-Anhalt, where the party won nearly 44% of the vote and 39 of 83 seats. However, it lacks an absolute majority and cannot form a regional government on its own.
The AfD has called for reducing military support for Ukraine and restoring economic relations with Russia.
