Fresh details have emerged in the escalating succession dispute in Tooro Kingdom, with the Attorney General reportedly advising President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni that the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s will should take first precedence in determining his successor.

According to a letter dated September 12, 2026, the Attorney General gave the advice after President Museveni sought legal guidance on the succession of the Tooro Kingdom following the death of King Oyo in August.

The advice reportedly states that the late King’s expressed wishes and intentions regarding succession should be carefully considered before any alternative arrangements are entertained.

The Attorney General further reportedly advised that the will should be followed unless it is successfully challenged in court, potentially adding a new legal dimension to the ongoing royal succession battle.

The advice comes amid a growing clash between the Babiito royal clan and members of Oyo’s family.

The Babiito succession committee recently selected former UBC journalist and royal family member Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next Omukama, while claims have emerged that Oyo’s 2022 will provided for his biological son to succeed him.

The Attorney General’s reported position could therefore have significant implications for the future of the Tooro throne.

The letter also reportedly called for the suspension of some key traditional succession rituals, including the throwing of coffee beans into the grave, as consultations and legal questions surrounding the succession continue.

With the late King’s will now at the centre of the dispute, attention turns to whether Tooro’s traditional succession process or Oyo’s documented wishes will ultimately determine who occupies the throne.
