AUSTRALIAN PENSIONER LOSES NEARLY R2 MILLION AFTER ALLEGEDLY FALLING VICTIM TO AI-GENERATED ROMANCE SCAM INVOLVING FAKE ‘SOUTH AFRICAN NURSE’ PROFILE

An Australian pensioner reportedly lost close to R2 million after becoming involved in an online relationship with what authorities say was an AI-generated fake identity posing as a South African nurse.

According to reports, the victim believed he was communicating with a real person and developed an emotional connection over time before sending large sums of money. Investigators later discovered that the profile and images used in the scheme were allegedly generated or manipulated using artificial intelligence technology.

The case has renewed concerns about the growing use of AI in online scams, with experts warning that increasingly realistic photos, videos and conversations are making it harder for people to identify fraud.

Authorities are urging the public to be cautious when forming online relationships, especially when requests for money are involved.
