IRAN’S NUCLEAR BOMBSHELL PUTS TRUMP UNDER PRESSURE
Iran’s nuclear standoff with the United States has entered a dangerous new phase.
Iranian lawmakers are pushing for tougher nuclear options, including discussions around nuclear weapons testing and withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iranian officials have also called for changes to the country’s nuclear doctrine.
The pressure is growing after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that it can no longer fully verify Iran’s nuclear stockpile because inspectors have been unable to access some damaged nuclear facilities.
The IAEA has estimated that Iran has 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%…far above the enrichment level normally required for civilian nuclear power, although 60% enrichment is still below the roughly 90% level generally associated with weapons-grade uranium.
The latest escalation comes as the IAEA Board of Governors has referred Iran to the UN Security Council over concerns about its nuclear obligations, further raising the stakes between Tehran and the West.
Iran says the pressure against its nuclear programme is politically motivated and has warned that continued confrontation could push countries away from the NPT.
The question now is whether Washington can force Tehran back to negotiations or whether the nuclear standoff is moving toward an even more dangerous confrontation.
