U.S. CONGRESS PASSES SWEEPING RUSSIA SANCTIONS BILL
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 262–159 on Wednesday to approve the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which had already passed the Senate.
The legislation now goes to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.
The bill would expand sanctions targeting Russian officials and banks, as well as Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers used to transport Russian oil and other energy products
It would also give the president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian energy, potentially affecting major buyers such as China and India.
The vote came after more than a year of congressional deadlock. Fifty-eight Democrats joined most Republicans in supporting the bill, while House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposed it, citing concerns including the broad tariff powers granted to the White House.
