Trump Administration Lifts U.S. Sanctions on Eritrean Defense Forces

The Trump administration on Friday lifted U.S. sanctions imposed on Eritrea’s Defense Forces and other Eritrean entities, according to a notice issued by the U.S. Treasury Department.

The move comes as the strategic importance of the Red Sea continues to grow amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and concerns over global trade and maritime security.

The United States imposed sanctions on Eritrea in 2021 under President Joe Biden, citing the Eritrean military’s alleged involvement in the Tigray conflict in Ethiopia.

The decision marks a significant change in Washington’s sanctions policy toward Eritrea
