“I Was Getting Depressed” — Davido Reveals How Sony Deal Nearly Ruined Everything Before Tekno Saved His Career
Davido has opened up about one of the toughest periods of his career, revealing that signing to Sony in 2016 left him unhappy after things didn’t go as he expected.
According to the Afrobeats star, he had enjoyed a strong run between 2011 and 2015 and was already doing well with shows in Nigeria, the UK and the US before signing the deal.
He said things changed after the deal, with an EP he released failing to perform well. Davido revealed that he even left Nigeria for about eight months and returned to find that the industry had changed.
“I was just like, man, what’s going on? God, you have to do something for me. I was getting depressed in 2016,” he said.
However, things changed when Tekno invited him to the studio and played him the song ‘IF’.
Davido said the song completely changed things for him and made him feel like he was back in his 2011 era again.
“And then Tekno just called me one day… ‘Come to the studio, I want to play you something.’ IF. And then shit changed again. It felt like 2011 again,” he recalled.
