HAIMBE CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION ON PACT FOR THE FUTURE AT UNGA81

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe has stressed that the Pact for the Future was built on shared commitments and that its delivery must be a joint responsibility
Speaking at a high-level event titled “Two Years After the Pact for the Future: Progress on Implementation, Challenges and Opportunities for Africa,” Minister Haimbe noted that Zambia co-facilitated both the Global Digital Compact (GDC) and the Sevilla Commitment. He highlighted that these roles placed the country at the core of global efforts on digital cooperation and development financing.
The gathering was co-hosted by Namibia and Zambia alongside the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union, the UN Secretary-General’s executive office, and the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa.
Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah moderated the session, which featured Kenyan President William Ruto, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, SADC Executive Secretary Elias M. Magosi, and other senior officials and youth leaders.
Participants at the event reviewed Africa’s progress under the pact, discussing challenges such as high borrowing costs, debt servicing, poverty, hunger, and illicit financial flows, alongside positive gains like increased electricity access and climate commitments.
In a separate engagement during his trip to New York, Minister Haimbe signed a joint communiqué with Andorra’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Imma Tor Faus, establishing formal diplomatic relations between the two nations with a shared focus on sustainable tourism.
Haimbe is representing President Hakainde Hichilema at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) and is scheduled to deliver Zambia’s General Debate statement on Monday, September 28, 2026.
