Indian Sailor Killed After Merchant Ship Is Attacked Off Oman
The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier MV Cape Dao was attacked while sailing toward India off the coast of Oman on Wednesday, killing an Indian crew member.
The vessel was carrying 28 crew members and was struck while transiting the waters near the Strait of Hormuz. Omani authorities said an evacuation operation rescued 27 crew members after the attack, which also caused a fire in the engine room.
The deceased sailor was identified as Suraj Yadav, an Indian national from Uttar Pradesh. The Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed his death and said 19 Indian nationals were among the crew.
The Forward Seamen’s Union of India said the vessel was hit by two torpedoes, striking the port side near the crew accommodation and engine room. The claim has not been independently verified.
The attack has prompted renewed calls from Indian maritime unions for stronger protection of commercial shipping and safer passage for civilian seafarers around the Strait of Hormuz.
