HH’S TREASON CASE THEN, AND BRIAN MUNDUBILE’S CASE NOW – MY VIEW
================

Sometimes history has a very funny way of coming back around.
In 2017, Hakainde Hichilema was in opposition. He was arrested and charged with treason under the Edgar Lungu government. He spent 4 months in Mukobeko Maximum Prison. In the end, the State entered a nolle prosequi and he was released. He was NEVER convicted of treason. Not even once.
Fast-forward to 2026.
Today, Brian Mundubile is in opposition. He and his veep Makebi Zulu are now facing a treason charge. They were formally charged in August 2026, according to his own lawyer.
That is where this story becomes very interesting for every Zambian.
In 2017, HH was the opposition leader facing the Government.
Today, HH is the President, and another opposition leader is facing a treason charge under his Government.
The circumstances of the two cases are not exactly the same and we should not pretend they are. The allegations are different. The evidence will be different.
But the BIGGER QUESTION remains: When the political tables turn, do we still believe in the same principles we demanded when we were in opposition?
Because let us be honest.
Being CHARGED is not the same as being GUILTY.
When HH was facing treason, we – his supporters – said let the courts decide. We said due process must be followed. We said the State must prove its case.
Today, Brian Mundubile deserves that SAME principle. Nothing more, nothing less.
He has the right to due process. He has the right to be heard. The State has the burden to prove its case in court. That is what the rule of law means.
Politics changes. Presidents change. Opposition leaders change.
But the rule of law should NOT change depending on which side of the table you are sitting on.
If we believed in justice in 2017, we must believe in justice in 2026.
That is the only way Zambia wins.
