UGANDAN GENERAL’S WARNING SPARKS NATIONAL DEBATE

A fresh wave of controversy has swept across Uganda’s political landscape following stark warnings from the military leadership regarding public commentary on defense matters. Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly cautioned civilians to steer entirely clear of discussing military affairs, advising that doing so poses direct personal and legal risks for their own safety.

The directive immediately triggered polarizing reactions across the political spectrum. High-profile political allies, including ruling establishment figures like Daudi Kabanda, doubled down on the warning by publicly urging local media houses to stop hosting political commentators and analysts on military topics to prevent potential state crackdowns and arrests.

On the flip side, civil society groups, opposition voices, and critical citizens have fiercely pushed back against the gag order. Critics argue that because the military is funded directly by taxpayers and state resources, its operations and leadership remain fundamentally accountable to the civilian population under democratic principles.

Where do you stand on this? Should matters of the military be strictly off-limits for public civilian commentary, or is open discussion a vital part of democratic accountability?
