Switzerland Rejects Stricter Neutrality Proposal by More Than 70%

Swiss voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to impose a stricter interpretation of the country’s traditional policy of neutrality, with more than 70 percent voting against the measure.

The referendum preserves Switzerland’s existing flexibility to impose sanctions on foreign countries, including Russia, without requiring prior authorization from the United Nations.

The result also leaves Switzerland with greater room to deepen security cooperation with NATO while maintaining its formal policy of military neutrality.

The vote marks a clear rejection of efforts to tighten Switzerland’s neutrality rules as the country continues to navigate growing security tensions across Europe.
