ZELENSKYY CONFIRMS HITS ON VOLGOGRAD REFINERY AND MASSIVE SAMARA OIL HUB
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck oil facilities in Russia’s Volgograd and Samara regions during the past 24 hours.
Ukraine’s General Staff subsequently identified the targets as the Lukoil Volgograd refinery and the Samara Linear Production and Dispatch Station, a massive Transneft oil-storage and transportation hub.
Explosions and fires were recorded at both facilities. According to the Security Service of Ukraine, NASA satellite monitoring detected fires near the Volgograd refinery’s delayed-coking complex and its ELOU-AVT-1 and ELOU-AVT-5 primary refining units. These installations are central to transforming crude oil into usable petroleum products.
The Volgograd refinery processes approximately 15 million tonnes of oil annually, producing gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel used by Russia’s economy and military.
This was not its first encounter with Ukrainian long-range weapons. Russian outlet ASTRA counted the May 29 attack as at least the tenth targeting of the refinery since the full-scale invasion. The facility was attacked again on July 31, making the latest operation at least the twelfth reported targeting—and potentially higher if attempted strikes without confirmed impacts are included.
Repeated attacks matter because repairing one damaged unit does not end the refinery’s vulnerability. Each new strike can interrupt production again, damage another stage of the refining process and force Russia to spend additional resources on repairs and air defenses.
The Samara complex covers more than 216 hectares and contains 71 tanks with a combined capacity exceeding 1.6 million cubic meters of oil. It also includes two pumping stations and an oil-blending facility, while four major pipelines converge there from Western Siberia, Tatarstan, Orenburg and Kazakhstan.
