UPND DISOWNS GEORGE MTONGA’S STATEMENT ON MAIZE MARKETING

The United Party for National Development (UPND) wishes to clarify that recent comments by George Mtonga regarding the marketing of maize do not represent the position of the Party or Government.

Mr Mtonga is not a UPND official or authorised party spokesperson, and his comments should therefore be treated as his personal opinion.

The UPND urges farmers not to be discouraged or worried by his statement. Government, through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), remains committed to supporting farmers and ensuring that maize produced by our farmers finds a market.

FRA will provide an official update on maize delivered to its satellite depots, the ongoing clearance of grain and payments to farmers and suppliers.

The Government’s 10-million-tonne maize production target is based on the commitment to expand production while developing markets in line with the Grow Zambia Agenda.

We therefore encourage farmers to continue planting and producing with confidence. Government will continue working to create domestic, regional and international markets for increased maize production.

Mr Mtonga’s statement should not be taken as an official UPND or Government position. Farmers should rely on official communication from FRA and the relevant Government institutions.
