Trump Questions Saudi Arabia’s Security Situation Amid Houthi Threats
U.S. President Donald Trump has said Saudi Arabia is capable of defending itself against attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement, while acknowledging that the kingdom is currently facing a difficult situation.
Asked whether Saudi Arabia could protect itself against Houthi attacks, Trump responded:
“They can, and the Saudis are fighters, but they’re in a bad situation right now.”
Reporters also asked whether the United States would join Saudi Arabia in defending the kingdom and fighting the Houthis.
Trump described the prospect as a difficult issue, saying:
“It’s a bad and difficult thing to say we’re going to do.”
His remarks leave questions about the extent of potential U.S. military support for Saudi Arabia as tensions rise between Riyadh and the Houthis.
The comments could also raise concerns among regional allies about Washington’s willingness to become directly involved in another military confrontation in Yemen.
