NKANDU DISMISSES FEARS OVER UPND TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY

UPND deputy spokesperson Elvis Nkandu has dismissed claims that the ruling party’s two-thirds majority in Parliament could undermine Zambia’s democracy.

Mr Nkandu said the party remained committed to upholding the Constitution, respecting democratic principles and supporting progressive legislation, regardless of its numerical strength.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, he said a strong parliamentary majority did not automatically translate into an abuse of authority.

“This insinuation of thinking that when you attain a two-thirds majority then governance becomes difficult for some individuals, I think it’s something that all of us should not be thinking about,” he said.

Mr Nkandu said the UPND would support opposition-sponsored bills that sought to improve citizens’ welfare, adding that Zambians had the right to express their views and hold government accountable.

He argued that electoral outcomes reflected the people’s choices and should not be viewed as threats to democracy.

“When the ruling party sweeps all the seats, it is also democracy because that is the will of the people,” he said.
