Jailed Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu says he will begin a hunger strike on Monday, accusing prison authorities of denying him private access to his lawyers despite a court order.

Lissu, who faces a treason charge carrying a possible death sentence, has been in detention for over 18 months and is awaiting a final ruling on November 6.

His lawyer says the CHADEMA leader is prepared to stop taking both food and medication in protest, insisting he is fighting for the rule of law.
