JONAS SAVIMBI: THE REBEL WHO FOUGHT FOR ANGOLA — AND REFUSED TO ACCEPT DEFEAT

He fought Portuguese colonial rule. He received guerrilla training in China. He became an ally of apartheid South Africa and was welcomed at the White House as an anti-communist freedom fighter.

But when Angola held its first multiparty elections in 1992, Jonas Savimbi rejected the results — and the country descended back into a devastating civil war.

For nearly three decades, Savimbi led UNITA in one of Africa’s longest and most destructive conflicts.

His supporters saw a brilliant strategist who refused to surrender. His critics saw a ruthless rebel leader whose determination to gain power prolonged the suffering of millions.

Then, on 22 February 2002, Savimbi was killed.

Less than two months later, Angola’s civil war moved toward an end after 27 years of bloodshed.

⚔️ Was Jonas Savimbi a freedom fighter, a warlord, or a complicated figure who was both?
