LAWMAKERS DEMAND RECORDS AS TRUMP’S RUSSIAN DIESEL DEAL FACES SCRUTINY

Senior Democrats are preparing to investigate Trump’s agreement to import Russian diesel if they regain control of Congress, Axios reports. Banks and ports are already being told to preserve the documents that could reveal how the arrangement was negotiated and carried out.

The warning went to six major American banks and several port authorities. Lawmakers want records of proposed or completed transactions, including contracts, shipping documents, payments and communications with suppliers and government officials. Republican Senator Thom Tillis also signed the letters, making the demand bipartisan.

At the centre of the dispute is the 2022 law restricting Russian energy imports. Lawmakers warn that facilitating these shipments could expose companies to legal action and congressional investigation. The Treasury Department has issued a sanctions licence enabling Russian diesel transactions and maintains that the arrangement is legal.

For Ukraine, the concern reaches beyond the legal dispute. Russian energy exports generate revenue for the state continuing its invasion, while sanctions are intended to constrain Moscow’s ability to sustain that war. Opening American markets to Russian diesel weakens that pressure and gives Putin a commercial opening while his forces continue attacking Ukrainian cities.

The demand to preserve records is a concrete step toward accountability. It puts companies on notice that the decisions, payments and communications behind this deal may face scrutiny—even if the administration currently authorises the trade.

Trump presents the arrangement as relief for fuel prices. Congress has a responsibility to examine its legality, who benefits and what Ukraine’s security stands to lose.
