Israel Could Face a Greater Missile Defense Challenge if Iran Launches Larger Barrages

Israel could face mounting pressure on its air defense network if Iran adopts a strategy of launching larger, more coordinated ballistic missile barrages in a renewed war.

Rather than firing smaller numbers of missiles over separate attacks, Tehran could attempt to concentrate more weapons into shorter periods, seeking to overwhelm interception systems and increase the chances that missiles reach their intended targets.

Israel relies on a layered defense network that includes Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 for ballistic missile threats, David’s Sling against certain medium-range threats, and Iron Dome for shorter-range rockets. US support, including THAAD capabilities, has also played a role in strengthening regional missile defense.

However, intercepting a larger barrage would present two major challenges: the number of incoming missiles that can be engaged simultaneously and the rate at which defensive interceptors are consumed. Replenishing advanced interceptors can take considerable time, making prolonged exchanges particularly demanding.

Israel could respond through a combination of active interception, improved early warning, protection of critical infrastructure and efforts to reduce the threat posed by Iranian missile launch capabilities. US and allied support could also remain important if a conflict expands.

The outcome would depend on Iran’s available launchers and missile stocks, the coordination of its attacks, and how effectively Israel and its partners detect and intercept incoming weapons.

A larger Iranian barrage would not automatically overwhelm Israeli defenses. But if Tehran can sustain coordinated attacks over an extended period, the conflict could become a test of not only interception technology, but also ammunition reserves and the ability of both sides to sustain a prolonged war.
