SUSPECTED RUSSIAN SEA DRONES SINK CIVILIAN SHIP DESPITE FRENCH WARNING

A French patrol aircraft detected the approaching sea drones and raised the alarm—but CONTSHIP JET was still struck three times and subsequently sank off Bulgaria.

Russia is a leading suspect. Maritime security firm Ambrey assessed that the attacking drone was likely based on Russia’s Murena-300S design. That points suspicion toward Moscow, although investigators have not publicly established who launched the attack.

All 18 sailors, including four Ukrainians, were rescued. Their survival does not diminish the seriousness of a civilian merchant ship being attacked inside a NATO country’s exclusive economic zone.

Europe needs more than the ability to watch these threats approach. It needs the means to protect shipping—and to hold whoever ordered this attack accountable.
