ZELENSKYY COULD RECEIVE G20 INVITATION AS US MIDTERMS APPROACH
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says he would not rule out inviting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to December’s G20 summit in Miami. The decision rests with Donald Trump, and Rubio said no announcement had been made.
Putin has already been invited, although his attendance remains unconfirmed. Ukraine’s participation would ensure its president can speak directly as world leaders discuss a war whose consequences extend far beyond Ukrainian borders.
The approaching US midterm elections add another dimension. If Democrats win control of either chamber of Congress, they could increase scrutiny of the administration’s Ukraine policy through hearings, investigations and funding decisions. That would not transfer control of foreign policy away from Trump, but it could make his decisions harder to shield from congressional challenge.
Whatever the election result, Zelenskyy represents a sovereign country fighting for its survival. Serious diplomacy requires sustained engagement with Ukraine’s leadership and respect for Ukrainians’ right to determine their own future.
Trump should get used to that conversation. Ukraine’s voice cannot be treated as an optional addition to discussions about Ukraine.
