BREAKING: Michigan Democratic Party chair says Haley Stevens is no longer a member of the party and never will be again, hours after she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers

Haley Stevens endorsed a Republican on Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, her own state party was showing her the door.

According to MLive, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel posted that Stevens is not a current member of the Michigan Democratic Party, nor will she be in the future.

That’s the chair of her own party, two days before Election Day.

It came after Stevens attended a church service in Detroit with Republican Mike Rogers and announced her vote for him over Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat who beat her in August’s primary. MLive reports Hertel accused her of abandoning the party and trying to undermine its nominee in the final stretch of one of the state’s marquee races. He called the endorsement an eleventh-hour distraction and said the party stands united behind El-Sayed.

The rebukes kept coming. MLive reports Michigan Democratic Party First Vice Chair Portia Roberson said Black voters in Detroit don’t need to be told who is fighting for them, pointing to Stevens’ appearance at the church with Rogers. Virgie Rollins, chair of the DNC’s Black Caucus, called Stevens a sellout and accused her of using Black Michiganders for a political stunt.

The Washington Examiner reports Stevens’ chief of staff resigned following the endorsement.

Axios reports Stevens told Rogers she remains a Democrat. Her party just answered that.

One weekend, one endorsement, and the Michigan Democratic Party made its decision about who it stands with.
