YOTOVA WINS BULGARIA’S PRESIDENTIAL RUNOFF

Iliana Yotova has won Bulgaria’s presidential election, defeating pro-Ukrainian former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov, who has conceded. Updated results put her support at approximately 57.6%, against 39.5% for Gyurov.

Yotova became acting president in January after Rumen Radev resigned. Her victory strengthens the political position of Radev, now prime minister, whose backing helped her campaign. She opposes further Bulgarian military assistance to Ukraine and advocates negotiations with Moscow and an immediate ceasefire.

For Ukraine, the concern is what those positions mean in practice. Calling for peace must come with an answer to how Ukrainians will be protected if Russia continues its attacks. Restricting military support without securing enforceable guarantees risks weakening the country defending itself.

Bulgaria’s presidency has limited executive power, and this election alone does not end Bulgarian assistance to Ukraine. But the president can veto legislation and influence the country’s political direction. Yotova’s victory gives another prominent platform to those advocating accommodation with Moscow.

The question remains whether that approach can secure meaningful concessions from Russia—or simply increase pressure on Ukraine.
