STEP-FATHER BREAKS DOWN IN TEARS AFTER STEPDAUGHTER CHOOSES BIOLOGICAL FATHER TO WALK HER DOWN THE AISLE

A 57-year-old stepfather has been left heartbroken after the daughter he raised from the tender age of six months allegedly chose her biological father, who had been absent for years, to escort her down the aisle on her wedding day.

Speaking to Uncle Fred, a visibly disappointed Mr Lembani Mbewe, 57, said he had raised Mbanandi Banda, 26, as his own daughter after marrying her mother in 2000, when the little girl was just six months old

According to Mbewe, he invested his time, love and resources in raising the young woman, ensuring that she received an education until she eventually became a doctor.

He said he never treated her as somebody else’s child, insisting that as far as he was concerned, she was his own flesh and blood.

However, he said the first painful experience came when Mbanandi was about to enter Grade Seven, when her surname was changed from Mbewe to Malama.

Although the development did not sit well with him, Mbewe said he swallowed his disappointment because he loved the family and did not want anything to disturb the peace of his marriage.

But according to him, the real heartbreak arrived when wedding preparations began.

He said his family informed him that Mbanandi had chosen her biological father, Kairos Malama, 62, to walk her down the aisle and formally hand her over to her future husband, instead of the man who had raised her for 26 years.

Mbewe said he was particularly hurt because, according to him, Malama had disappeared from the picture for years and only resurfaced when the daughter had grown up, completed her education and become a doctor.

He described the situation as painful, saying it felt as though someone had abandoned a construction site during foundation works only to return when the building was complete, demanding the keys and insisting on cutting the ribbon

“Uncle Fred, I took care of this child from when she was six months old. I educated her and raised her as my own until she became a doctor. Now that she is getting married, I am being told that her biological father will escort her to the altar. I am shocked and disappointed,” he said.

Mbewe said the situation had left him questioning his place in the family, especially after dedicating so many years to bringing up the young woman.

He said it felt like being employed to build a house, buying the cement, paying the builders and supervising the construction, only for someone else to arrive on opening day, wearing a suit and claiming the honour of handing over the keys.

The situation has also reminded him of a politician who disappears after elections, only to return during the next campaign period seeking another mandate. According to Mbewe, the biological father had allegedly been missing during the difficult years but had now returned when there was a wedding, a beautiful gown and an opportunity to walk a doctor down the aisle.

Now, the heartbroken stepfather has asked Uncle Fred what he should do, saying he does not want to turn his daughter’s wedding into a battlefield but is struggling to understand why his years of sacrifice appear to have been overlooked.

LESSON:

Parenthood is not measured by biology alone. It is also demonstrated through presence, sacrifice, love and responsibility. A person who stands with a child during difficult seasons deserves appreciation when the sunshine finally comes. Equally, children should remember that the people who raised them deserve honour, even when biological family ties remain important. After all, the person who waters a tree throughout its growth should not be forgotten simply because somebody else planted the seed.

  1. Family dynamics are such a complex issue. It is difficult to lay the blame on any one party. You would have to hear both sides to get a balanced picture.

However, it is unfortunate that the young lady had to make what is clearly a heart wrenching choice. I feel for her. A child should never have to face such a predicament.
