CANADA ANNOUNCES INITIAL €500 MILLION CONTRIBUTION TO SUPPORT UKRAINE

Canada has announced an initial €500 million contribution through the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan mechanism, strengthening international efforts to sustain Ukraine’s defence and financial resilience.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha thanked Canada and his Canadian counterpart for their continued support, describing the commitment as an expression of solidarity and shared responsibility for Ukraine’s freedom and Europe’s security.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the contribution during the EU–Canada summit in Montreal. Canada’s participation would also open opportunities for Ukraine to purchase Canadian military equipment through the mechanism, subject to the agreed arrangements.

For Ukrainians enduring another winter of Russian attacks, sustained financing means the ability to plan ahead, maintain essential services and support the country’s defence. Announcements must become practical assistance, and Canada’s commitment is another important step toward meeting those needs.

Canada continues to demonstrate that Ukraine’s survival and European security are shared responsibilities—ones that require lasting support.
