TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PLANS NEARLY R17 MILLION GRANT FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S AFRIFORUM TO DOCUMENT CRIMES AGAINST AFRIKANERS AND OTHER MINORITY COMMUNITIES, RAISING FRESH QUESTIONS ABOUT WASHINGTON’S INVOLVEMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA’S DOMESTIC AFFAIRS!

The administration of US President Donald Trump is planning to award a grant worth approximately US$986,500 to South African civil rights organisation AfriForum to document violence and hateful rhetoric directed at Afrikaners and other minority communities.

The proposed funding comes from the US State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

The project is intended to create a comprehensive record of violence affecting Afrikaners and other minority populations in South Africa, investigate access to justice and examine whether law enforcement provides adequate protection. It would also support research and recommendations aimed at improving protection for affected communities.

However, the proposed grant has already attracted controversy.

AfriForum has been vocal about farm murders, alleged racial discrimination and the treatment of Afrikaners in South Africa. The organisation has also engaged directly with officials in the Trump administration over these concerns.

The issue is particularly sensitive because President Trump has repeatedly raised allegations of persecution and a so-called white genocide in South Africa. The South African government has rejected those allegations.

Although farm attacks and murders are real and serious crimes, available research and official investigations have not established a pattern of genocide or targeted violence against Afrikaners.

There are also questions about the priorities behind the proposed American funding, particularly given the wider debate over US foreign assistance and international human rights programmes.

IMPORTANT: The proposed US$986,500 grant has not been confirmed as money already paid to AfriForum. The allocation is still subject to final approval..

The development adds another chapter to the growing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Pretoria, with South Africa’s domestic race, land and human rights debates increasingly becoming part of the relationship between the two governments.

Should the United States fund an organisation to investigate violence against minority communities in South Africa, or should these matters be handled through South Africa’s own institutions?
