DA Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille has revealed that her preferred coalition options for the city are the ANC or ActionSA.
Her reasoning is that a government involving just two parties could be easier to manage than a broad coalition made up of several smaller political parties.
However, her comments raise a major political question. While Zille may be willing to work with either the ANC or ActionSA, will those parties be willing to work with her
The ANC and DA have a complicated political history, while ActionSA has previously positioned itself as an alternative to both parties. Any agreement would therefore require difficult negotiations and compromises.
Johannesburg’s election results have made coalition negotiations particularly important, with no single party securing enough support to govern the city alone.
For Zille, the challenge may not simply be finding coalition partners, but convincing them that working with the DA is in their political interests
