CONGOLESE BOXER KILLED IN FIRE AS SUSPECTED XENOPHOBIC ATTACK SHOCKS THE CONTINENT

The reported killing of Congolese boxer Roméo Katompa, affectionately known as “Bololo”, has sent shockwaves through the African boxing fraternity and migrant communities, reigniting fears over the safety of foreign nationals living in South Africa.
According to preliminary reports, Katompa died during the night of 16 to 17 July after allegedly being subjected to a brutal attack in Johannesburg. Although police investigations are still underway and the full circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, early reports suggest the attack may have been linked to the latest wave of anti-immigrant violence that has unsettled parts of the country.
The tragedy has prompted renewed questions about how many more innocent African lives must be lost before violence against fellow Africans is brought to an end.
Katompa was far more than a boxer. He had built a life in South Africa, marrying a South African woman and raising their child while pursuing his passion for the sport. Within boxing circles, he earned widespread respect for his dedication and professionalism, serving as a sparring partner to former WBC cruiserweight champion Junior Makabu.
Friends and fellow athletes remember him as a disciplined fighter whose ambitions extended beyond the ring.
His reported death has left relatives, friends and supporters devastated. Across social media, tributes have poured in from people describing him as a hardworking family man whose life was cut short in deeply disturbing circumstances.
The incident has also intensified concern among African migrant communities, many of whom say they continue to live under the constant threat of intimidation and violence despite contributing to South Africa’s economy and society. Human rights advocates argue that repeated attacks on foreign nationals damage the country’s international standing and undermine the ideals of African solidarity.
