ECONOMIST WELCOMES ZAMBIA’S SINGLE-DIGIT INFLATION

ECONOMIST Kelvin Chisanga has welcomed the return of Zambia’s inflation rate to single digits, calling it a pivotal economic development.

In a statement, Wednesday, Chisanga said the January 2026 inflation reading of 9.4% marks a psychological breakthrough.

He noted that this shift follows a prolonged period of double-digit inflation that had strained household budgets.

Chisanga attributed the decline to tighter monetary policy, relative exchange rate stability, and improved supply chains.

He observed that while inflation has eased, the cost of living remains elevated for many Zambians.

He stressed that single-digit inflation does not equate to affordability, but rather signals stabilisation.

Chisanga said the development could create room for lower interest rates, which may boost private sector growth.

He warned that sustaining this progress will depend on managing risks such as fuel prices and climate shocks.

He urged authorities to maintain fiscal discipline and ensure a consistent energy supply.

He also called for policies that translate macroeconomic gains into real improvements in household welfare.

Chisanga described the 9.4% figure as a confidence-boosting signal for both consumers and investors.

He said the focus now should be on ensuring that this downward trend is sustained and inclusive.
