IMF SAYS ZAMBIA’S ECONOMY HAS IMPROVED BUT POVERTY LEVELS REMAIN HIGH

INTERNATIONAL Monetary Fund executive director for Zambia says Zambia’s economy has stabilized, with average per capita income growth of about 2 percent over 2022–24, supported by continued reform efforts.

Inflationary pressures are gradually subsiding. In 2024, real GDP growth is estimated at 4 percent well above earlier projections underpinned by stronger mining and services performance and prioritizing electricity access to productive sectors.

The authorities’ commitment to reform is yielding dividends: macroeconomic stability is improving, fiscal consolidation is progressing, and reserve buffers are strengthening.

However, poverty and inequality remain high, and the economic outlook is vulnerable to external shocks, climate events, and domestic political pressures ahead of the 2026 elections.

  1. Rightly put and assesses. All things being equal, the measures are slow but effectively being addressed.
Mr. Chizombe wants to suggest that growth has stagnated cause the announced Interest rate by BOZ has remained constant.
This is calculated to arrest inflation. If inflation outstrips growth. We will end up in the situation Zimbabwe is in or Agrentina is quibbling to get out of.
One has to understand that inflation is dealt with productivity and that balanced with consumption. If the balance over time is out of step. Inflation or its opposite is the result.

  2. Good indicators. The water has slowly started to heat up in the pool. Soon the warmth will start to filter to everyone. This is better hope than during PF reign when water had started to get cold with no hope of heating up. If UPND can be focused on development & stop these amateur politics with clowns, the country can quickly get to a boiling economy where real life improvements will be felt by the majority poor Zambians. We welcome positive economic improvement news any day!!
