Mmmm.. Awe Naikosa.
I see my earlier post stirred strong feelings ka? But I appreciate everyone who shared their honest thoughts.. even the ones who disagreed. Let me clarify, pantu I think I wasn’t clear enough.
I am NOT defending Yo Maps. AWE
Let me be loud about that.
That ka clip he showed in that music video (two girls kissing) goes against what many of us, including myself, believe is morally right. I am deeply rooted in African culture nama values yesu. I believe in protecting the moral fabric of our society elo I understand completely why people are angry and demanding accountability. That anger is valid. That disappointment is valid. I share it. Ichachine fye.
My earlier point was never to sugarcoat his actions or dismiss how anyone feels..iyo. It was simply this.. outside of this mistake, I have seen a side of Yo Maps Yo that is genuinely kind, generous and trying to do good. That doesn’t erase what he did wrong..Awe. but it does mean that when he falls, maybe he deserves a little room to learn, apologize and grow.
Accountability na grace can coexist. We can say “what you did was wrong” without saying “you are entirely evil, satana iwe.”
So no, I’m not defending the act. I’m defending the possibility of a young man learning from his mistake without being completely torn down.. especially one who has tried to lift so many others
Thank you for holding me accountable naine. Let’s keep loving our culture, our values and even our flawed artists.. by calling them to a higher standard, not canceling them completely.
