SADC LEADERS PLEDGE URGENT ACTION TO END MADAGASCAR’S POLITICAL CRISIS AND RESTORE STABILITY

Southern African leaders have pledged to take urgent steps to help resolve Madagascar’s political crisis and restore stability in the country.

This follows rising political and social tensions in the country.

During a virtual Extraordinary Summit chaired by President Arthur Peter Mutharika in his capacity as Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace and democratic governance in Madagascar, urging all political actors to pursue dialogue and avoid violence.

In a statement the bloc approved the immediate deployment of a technical fact-finding mission to Madagascar by 22 October to assess the situation and report back by the end of the month.

SADC also called for the protection of vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and the elderly, and directed its Secretariat to coordinate efforts with the African Union, United Nations, and Indian Ocean Commission.
