2 Rental Ford Rangers Caught Being Smuggled to Mozambique on Fake Papers From SA

Two Ford Ranger bakkies that were fraudulently rented have been stopped at Kosi Bay border while being smuggled into Mozambique.

Border Management Authority (BMA) spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said it happened on Thursday. Border guards became suspicious during checks and called the rental companies.

First vehicle: White 2025 Ford Ranger double cab with Mpumalanga plates. Stopped at 12:30pm. Driver is a 75-year-old South African man who wanted to cross to Mozambique.

The rental company said it never gave him a cross-border letter or registration papers. The tracker showed the car was supposedly parked in Johannesburg. When they checked with Cartrack, they found the tracker had been removed.

Second vehicle: Another Ford Ranger. The rental company flagged it as fraudulently rented. Border guards alerted Mozambican officials and it was also stopped. The driver said he borrowed it from a friend in Pretoria.

Both vehicles had fake cross-border letters and fake RC1 registration documents.

Two men were arrested. They face charges of possession of suspected stolen property, forgery, fraud and uttering. They will appear in court today, Friday 30 October.

BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato said this shows why intelligence and working with private companies matters. – IOL NEWS
