Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has called on President Hakainde Hichilema, to publicly condemn political violence ahead of Zambia’s general elections.
Addressing supporters at a campaign rally in Katuba yesterday, Mundubile said Zambia must reject what he described as a growing culture of violence involving pangas, physical assaults and firearms.
“Today, I want to denounce the culture of pangas, the culture of fights and the culture of guns,” Mundubile said.
He challenged leaders across the political divide to take a public stand against violence.
“I challenge my brother President Hichilema tomorrow, you should also come out and denounce pangas, denounce guns and denounce violence,” he said.
Mundubile further claimed that five people had lost their lives in recent incidents of political violence, citing Kaputa, Magoye and Kanyama, and urged authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
Mundubile urged young people not to participate in acts of violence during the election period.
“I also call on the youth to reject violence and condemn it in all its forms,” he said.
He concluded his remarks by repeating his call for peace, saying: “We want peace.”
The remarks come amid heightened political campaigning ahead of Zambia’s general elections, with several parties expressing concern over isolated incidents of violence during campaign activities.
