RUSSIA UK  TELEGRAPH COLUMNIST QUESTIONS BRITAIN’S READINESS FOR A WAR WITH RUSSIA

British journalist and Telegraph columnist Michael Deacon has questioned whether the United Kingdom is currently capable of fighting a major war against Russia, arguing that repeated warnings from London about Moscow are not matched by Britain’s military preparedness

Deacon also criticized calls for a return to compulsory military service, arguing that introducing conscription in modern Britain would face significant political and social resistance. He questioned whether enough young people could realistically be recruited and trained into an effective fighting force

He further pointed to defense spending and the cost of the UK’s welfare system. Citing figures for the 2025–26 financial year, Deacon said Britain spent around £62 billion on defense, compared with approximately £145 billion on working-age benefits.

The columnist argued that the government should focus on strengthening the armed forces rather than relying primarily on political rhetoric about Britain’s ability to confront external threats.

Deacon’s article also used highly sarcastic and provocative language to criticize British political leaders, welfare policy, attitudes toward patriotism, and the country’s military preparedness.

His central argument was that Britain should avoid becoming involved in a direct conflict with Russia while its armed forces remain, in his view, insufficiently prepared for such a confrontation.

The comments are Deacon’s opinion and analysis, rather than an official assessment by the British government or the Ministry of Defence.
