LET’S EDUCATE OURSELVES: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE RESULTS AGAINST KENYA, TANZANIA AND UGANDA?
There is an important detail about the AFCON 2027 qualifiers that every football supporter should understand.
Kenya 🇰🇪, Tanzania 🇹🇿 and Uganda 🇺🇬 are not ordinary participants in these qualifiers.
They are the three co-hosts of AFCON 2027, and CAF has already guaranteed them places at the tournament regardless of their results in the qualifying matches.
Their matches still count, their points, goals scored, goals conceded, wins, draws and defeats are recorded in the group standings.
So, if Tanzania lose 2–0 to Guinea-Bissau, for example, that result does not disappear simply because Tanzania are already qualified.
Indeed, Guinea-Bissau received three points and those points can be decisive in determining which non-host team qualifies from that group. CAF itself recorded Guinea-Bissau’s 2–0 victory over Tanzania as one of the notable Matchday 1 results. (Confédération Africaine de Football)
SO HOW DOES QUALIFICATION WORK?
Normally, in a four-team AFCON qualifying group:
1st = qualifies
2nd = qualifies
3rd = eliminated
4th = eliminated
There are three exceptions:
🇰🇪 Group D — Kenya
🇺🇬 Group H — Uganda
🇹🇿 Group L — Tanzania
Because the host is already qualified, only the highest-ranked team OTHER THAN the host qualifies from that group.
CAF explicitly confirms this rule. (Confédération Africaine de Football)
Example, Group L finishes:
1. Tanzania — 10 points
2. Nigeria — 9 points
3. Guinea-Bissau — 8 points
4. Madagascar — 4 points
Tanzania are already qualified as hosts.
Therefore, Nigeria qualifies as the highest-ranked non-host.
Second scenario;
1. Guinea-Bissau — 11 points
2. Tanzania — 8 points
3. Nigeria — 7 points
4. Madagascar — 3 points
Guinea-Bissau qualifies.
Tanzania’s position does not take away a qualification place from the other teams; rather, the host occupies its guaranteed place and one additional team comes out of the group.
WHAT ABOUT ZAMBIA?
This is where things become very important for us.
Zambia are in Group I together with:
🇩🇿 Algeria
🇿🇲 Zambia
🇹🇬 Togo
🇧🇮 Burundi
There is no host country in our group, therefore, the normal rule applies:
TOP TWO QUALIFY.
There is no “one qualifying place” situation in Group I.
Zambia’s results against Algeria, Togo and Burundi all count normally, and our final position after six matchdays determines whether we reach AFCON 2027.
CAF’s published qualifying format confirms that Groups D, H and L have the special host arrangement, while the remaining groups operate under the normal top-two qualification system. (Confédération Africaine de Football)
ONE MORE IMPORTANT POINT
The fact that Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are already qualified does not mean their matches are friendlies.
They are official AFCON qualifying matches.
They can affect:
• Points
• Goal difference
• Goals scored
• The ranking of the other teams
• Who eventually takes the available qualifying position
This is why understanding the competition regulations is important before interpreting the tables.
Football analysis is not only about watching the 90 minutes. Sometimes, the competition structure is just as important as what happens on the pitch.
Let’s educate ourselves before we debate the table
