ALBANIAN POLICE BATTLE ROCK-THROWING STUDENTS AS TIRANA PROTESTS TURN VIOLENT AND RAMA STANDS FIRM

Student-led crowds in Tirana clashed with riot police on Saturday after gathering outside the education ministry and hurling stones and rocks at officers. Police responded with tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to push the groups back. Protesters started a fire at the door of the agriculture ministry, set government buildings and banks alight, smashed shop windows, and pulled up paving stones as ammunition.

The scenes mark the latest escalation in weeks of unrest that began as largely peaceful summer demonstrations against a luxury coastal development tied to Jared Kushner and have since widened into demands for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign over corruption, job shortages, and failing education standards.

Rama, who has held power since 2013 and secured a fourth term last year, has rejected calls to step down. He has stated that governments change through elections, not street pressure, and that his mandate is to complete Albania’s path toward European Union membership by 2030. He has described the violence as a threat to that goal rather than a legitimate challenge to his government.

Police have arrested and prosecuted hundreds over the course of the demonstrations, with scores of officers and protesters injured.

Protester Daniel Tahiri, 28, told reporters, “Albanians have woken up,” and called the government “a dictatorship with the clothes of democracy.” Other students have cited thirteen years of empty promises on corruption and living costs. The movement remains largely leaderless and youth-driven, organized through social media after the initial Flamingo protests over coastal development.

Government buildings and private property continue to sustain damage while authorities insist order will be restored. The clashes show a clear breakdown between elected authority and street demands that have moved beyond petition into destruction.
