DEC confiscates “impiya shabalanda”, asserts Binwell

NRPUP Presidential Affairs Chairman Binwell Mpundu asserts that, the Drug Enforcement Commission—DEC, has moved in to confiscate donations made to the party by well wishers, mostly Zambians at home and abroad.

Mpundu says the money was meant to pay polling agents countrywide.

He further asserts that Police have arrested several senior party officials.

He accused the ruling UPND of desperation.

“The UPND were mocking us when we started asking for donations from our supporters, calling us broke. But in a shocking move yesterday, they sent DEC officers to come and confiscate our money meant to pay our polling agents countrywide,” Mpundu says.

According to Mpundu, the crackdown has also extended to key party allies.

He cited the alleged abductions of Ambassador Martha Lungu and Hannah Katontoka, and the alleged arrests of State Counsel George Chisanga, Japhen Mwakalombe, and Sebastian Kopulande.

“What kind of desperation is this. Now these are stories and atrocities that their people on Facebook are not willing to discuss,” he says.

Mpundu has however not provided details of where the alleged seizure of funds took place, amount or the exact charges facing those arrested.

DEC and Zambia Police had not issued a statement on the allegations by press time.

NRPUP says it expects electoral authorities and law enforcement to allow all parties to operate freely ahead of polling day.
